As easy as ABC…
A simple way to settle the mind when it won’t shut off
Some nights the body is ready to sleep.
The mind is not.
Thoughts loop.
Replay.
Project forward.
Try to solve things at 2300.
That’s where this comes in.
What This Is
ABC Grounding is a simple mental task that helps you shift out of rumination and into a steadier, lower-intensity focus.
It is not forcing sleep.
It is giving your mind something neutral to do so sleep can happen.
How to Use It
Pick a category.
Keep it simple:
- Animals
- Cities
- First names
- Foods
- Airlines
- Brands
Then:
Start with A
Move through the alphabet
Example (Airlines):
Air France
British Airways
Continental
Delta
Emirates
Keep going.
No pressure to be perfect.
If You Get Stuck
Pause.
Stay with the letter.
Or skip it.
Then keep moving.
If Your Mind Wanders
It will.
When it does:
Notice it.
Don’t fight it.
Return to the letter.
That’s the rep.
If You Reach Z
Still awake?
Start again.
Same category or a new one.
Why This Works
This is not distraction for the sake of distraction.
It works because it:
Interrupts rumination
Breaks the loop of replay and “what if” thinking
Engages the mind lightly
Just enough focus to settle, not enough to activate
Gives the brain a lane
Instead of bouncing between stress and silence
Supports downshift
Often people fade out around E–F–G
Field Note (LE / FR)
This works well after:
- High-call nights
- Late shift carryover
- Adrenaline drop-off
- Mental replay after incidents
It gives you something to do with the mind
instead of letting it run the night.
